Privacy Policy

This notice explains how information is used to operate HealthMercy. Read it alongside the consent information shown when you register or request a service.

Who we are and how to reach us

HealthMercy is a nonprofit platform based in Cape Town, South Africa. The company registration displayed on this website is CIPC 2025/748638/08. Contact info@healthmercy.org about this notice or how your information is handled.

Information used by the platform

Depending on your account and service, information includes your name, email, phone, location, profile details, eligibility information and professional credentials. Care requests may include symptoms, medical history, messages, photographs, documents, assessments, prescriptions, appointment details and feedback.

Account verification, sign-in, security and administrative activity also create operational records. Only provide information you are authorised to share.

Why information is used

Information supports email verification, account review, matching requests with suitable volunteers, care coordination, appointments, communication, funding referrals, feedback, security and platform administration. Email is used for verification codes, password recovery and relevant account, case, message and appointment updates.

Required and optional information

A valid email and the required profile and eligibility information are needed to verify and review your account. Required care-request fields help the team assess and coordinate your request. If you do not provide required information, the corresponding registration or request cannot be completed. Optional fields can be left blank.

Who may receive information

Authorised HealthMercy staff and relevant care professionals may access information according to their role, matching, assignment and the request workflow. When a case is referred for hospital-bill support, relevant patient and case information may be shared with matched donors to assess the referral. Review the specific data-sharing consent before submitting a request.

Some professional profiles, reviews and platform impact information appear publicly. Avoid including another person’s private or medical information in a public review.

Cookies and browser storage

Cookies and browser storage support sign-in, security and preferences. Where configured, Google Analytics is used to understand website use. Browser settings can restrict cookies and storage, but doing so may affect sign-in or other features.

Retention and your requests

Deleting or closing your account does not necessarily remove every record. Any information retained after deletion is kept for record tracking and security—for example, to maintain an audit trail of account and case activity, investigate misuse or security incidents, and meet applicable recordkeeping obligations.

Contact info@healthmercy.org to ask what information remains, why it has been retained, and whether it can be deleted. You may also request access or corrections, object to processing, or ask about withdrawing consent, where applicable. We may need to verify your identity before handling your request.

Privacy complaints

Please contact HealthMercy about a privacy concern. You may also lodge a complaint with South Africa’s Information Regulator. The Regulator publishes its complaint process and contact details on its website.
